The kidnapping and sexual assault of a four-year-old girl in 2002 has resulted in the suspect being sentenced on kidnapping and Criminal Sexual Assault charges.
Wyoming Police say that 46-year-old Richard Samuel Adams was sentenced Monday afternoon in Kent County Circuit Court to 11 to 30 years in prison. He had previously pleaded guilty to first-degree CSC.
He was arrested in Allegan County in 2020 after the Michigan State Police Laboratory notified police that a DNA test using CODIS matching technology placed Adams at the Amsterdam Gardens apartment complex on Eastern Avenue, where the toddler was abducted in August 2002. Wyoming Public Safety says his DNA was later recovered from the girl's body. She had been abandoned in northern Kent County.
The Kent County Prosecutor's Office originally charged Adams with kidnapping and Criminal Sexual Conduct in the 1st and 2nd degrees. The 2nd-degree CSC charge was later dropped.
Phone pings led detectives to the suspect's location in Grand Rapids.
