First case of coronavirus confirmed at Kent County jail

Grand Rapids, Mich. (WOOD) -- A case of coronavirus is being confirmed at the Kent County jail.

It is the jail's first confirmed case of COVID-19.

The Kent County Sheriff's Department says the man was arrested on April 23rd and tested on the 27th after staff at the jail were told a family member of the man had tested positive for the virus. The inmate's positive test result came back on the 28th.

Officials say the inmate is in isolation and that the Grand Rapids police officer who arrested him tested negative for the virus. All other officers who came into contact with him were wearing personal protective gear.

One inmate who came into contact with the man is in isolation as well, but they have also tested negative for the virus.
