Muskegon Heights offering 'Guns for Groceries'

MUSKEGON, Mich. (via WOOD TV 8) — Muskegon Heights is working to curb gun violence with two new programs.

The city has seen two homicides so far this year, both within a week. Authorities say a woman was shot and killed by her husband last week and William Bass was shot and killed Wednesday night at a family barbecue.

The two programs will work separate angles to decrease violent crime.

Violent crime in the city is down overall since Joseph Thomas took over as police chief in 2016. But he, like all chiefs, are always working to improve the numbers.

"We as police officers have to realize we are no longer in the law enforcement business," Thomas said. "We are in the policing business. Now, you might say, holy cow, that's the same thing. No, it's not. Policing is solving social ills before they come law enforcement incidents."
