Man cleared in hotel murder; wasn't in Michigan

HOLLAND TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities now say a man they had been looking for in connection to a Saturday homicide near Holland wasn't even in the state at the time.

Authorities hadissued a murder chargeagainst Claudio Estrada Jr., 23, of Holland and investigators released his photo as they looked for him. Then on Sunday evening, the Ottawa County Sheriff's Office said Estrada had turned himself in to police in Hidalgo, Texas. After speaking with Estrada and Hidalgo police, local authorities said they no longer believed he was in Michigan when 14-year-old T.J. Wells was shot and killed.

He has been released from custody in the border town of Hidalgo.

The sheriff's office said in a release that it got "misleading/false" information from witnesses that led it to identify Estrada as the suspect.
