Suspected killer pleads guilty to escaping jail

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The man who police say killed his girlfriend last summer and then escaped from the Kalamazoo County jail was back in court Thursday afternoon.

Surrounded by sheriff’s deputies, a shackled Donnovan Lewis walked into a Kalamazoo courtroom, where he pleaded guilty to felony escape.

Lewis escaped from jail on Sept. 19.  Police reports show Lewis was taken to the jail yard for recreation time, where he was allowed to switch from flip flops to shoes.  Lewis then scaled two 15-foot fences and escaped.

Lewis is an athlete, and police reports detailed the amazement of deputies and other inmates about how fast he scaled the wire-topped fences.
