GRCC shows off renovated Ford Fieldhouse

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Grand Rapids Community College on Monday showed off the $8 million renovation to its Ford Fieldhouse, aimed at bringing in more students and sports spectators.

Nicole Horton had leg surgery recently, but her wheelchair didn't slow her down as she went to the rededication of the fieldhouse to see the makeover in person.

"It's miraculous," she described. "They've put in study spaces. It's like they're promoting that they want students to be in the Ford Fieldhouse. We didn't have that before. There was no place for students to mingle and work on schoolwork."

Work started in May 2018 and wrapped up in time for the facility on Lyon Street NE to reopen this month. Paid for through GRCC's savings and fundraising, the school upgraded and added new equipment to the fitness center, bought new portable basketball hoops and installed two more basketball courts.
