Arrests made for homicide of MI military member

ST. JOSEPH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities have arrested two people connected to a homicide in Berrien County Saturday morning.

The St. Joseph Township Police Department says two people were arrested in connection with the homicide of Tyrone Hassel III on New Year's Eve.

Both suspects have been charged with open murder.

Authorities say they will be arraigned within the next few days.  

Hassel, a 23-year-old service member was on leave visiting family for the holidays when around 11:10 p.m. dispatchers were alerted to a shooting in the 2000 block of Colfax Avenue, south of East Delaware Avenue in Berrien County's St. Joseph Township, southeast of St. Joseph.

Officers arrived to find Hassel, gravely injured from multiple gunshot wounds. 

Medical first responders treated Hassel's injuries at the scene and took him to Spectrum Lakeland Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Authorities say no names or further information will be released at this time.
