Rain closes W. MI rinks, ski slopes on New Year's Eve

CANNON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Before the ball could fall, rain fell on West Michigan, forcing ice rinks and ski slopes to close on New Year's Eve.

Cannonsburg Ski Area announced Monday it would remain closed because of the rain.

“Sorry everyone, hopefully the new year brings much better weather,” the venue stated on Facebook.

Cannonsburg has battled wet, mild weather in December but was able to make enough snow to officially open for the season on the 15th. Unfortunately, the ski area has had to close three times since, including Monday.

"It's not fun by any means," Cannonsburg's marketing director Danielle Musto told 24 Hour News 8. "Our staff, we're like a family here and we spend months getting ready for the winter season, so it's always very disappointing when we have to close."

Cannonsburg plans to make snow through the night and intends on reopening at noon New Year's Day.
