CBP to add medical checks after child dies in custody

An 8-year-old Guatemalan boy is the second minor to die in the custody of US Customs and Border Protection this month. The boy was hospitalized twice after being detained with his father, and died near midnight on Christmas Eve. The cause of death has not been announced.

CBP Commissioner Kevin K. McAleenan announced Tuesday night that the CBP will conduct additional medical checks on children moving forward, and consider assistance from other partners in the future. The agency noted that it will be reviewing its policies on caring for children in custody.
