Mutilation suspect's ex-fiancee suspects drug relapse

FENNVILLE, Mich. (WOOD) — A woman who once planned to marry the Grand Rapids man now charged with dismembering a missing woman's body says she is shocked and saddened by the case.

Tori Collins is the former fiancée of  29-year-old Jared Chance. They broke up roughly a month before Chance was arrested for allegedly mutilating the body of his friend, 31-year-old Ashley Young of Oshtemo Township.

Grand Rapids police say the crime was carried out in Chance's apartment building on Franklin Street — a home Chance and Collins once shared.

"I don't know what would possess him to do something like this," said Collins. "I don't know. I can't even put any of the pieces together at all. None of them fit. I don't understand."

Collins says she met Chance in 2014 through mutual friends at a bar.

"Jared just happen to be there," she recalled.

Soon after meeting, they started dating. Then roughly six months later, they got matching tattoos and were engaged.
