BBB: Free trial schemes net 40K complaints; $1B lost

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The Better Business Bureau Serving Western Michigan has a warning for consumers: That online free trial offer you saw is probably too good to be true.

The BBB released a study Wednesday that concluded more than $1 billion has been lost over the past decade to free trial scams. The average victim loses $186 to the scam, and West Michigan consumers are no exception.

“What ends up happening is that the trial offer is much shorter than you expect, and if you don’t immediately cancel them, you’re stuck with a subscription. They send you more product, they bill that credit card that you only thought was going to be for a couple bucks, and they hit it for hundreds of dollars,” explained BBB Serving Western Michigan spokesman Troy Baker.

He pointed out that a lot of companies promise a 14-day trial, but that time starts as soon as you submit your order.
