Jeweler: Thief's loot 'not going to help them'

BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (WOOD) — The search is continues for a man suspected of breaking into or trying to break into three businesses that sell jewelry in the span of two weeks.

All the stores hit are along the Capital Avenue SW corridor: Pearlman’s Jewelers on Oct. 30, King Jewelers on Nov. 9 and Happy House Gift Shop on Nov. 13. All the incidents happened between 12:15 a.m. and 4:45 a.m., when the businesses were closed.

Derek King, the owner of King Jewelers, told 24 Hour News 8 Sunday that his security system alerted him as soon as someone threw a rock and brick at a glass door or window. He said someone at the gas station across the street witnessed it.

"They threw the rock and it didn't get through the first time and they tried it again and tried it again," King said, explaining the glass was protected with a special "ballistic film." "They finally got through with a small hole."

King said he had added extra security measures, including the film, after a break-in more than five years ago.

The suspect never got inside King Jewelers, but King said they did get away with some items at Happy House Gift Shop.
