Bittersweet Ski Resort open for season early

OTSEGO, Mich. (WOOD) — The snow and colder-than-normal temperatures may have you thinking about staying indoors. But as it turns out, there are plenty of reasons to get outside this time of year.

This is opening weekend at Bittersweet Resort, where skiers and snowboarders flock to West Michigan to get a little taste of winter.

Snowboarder Merv Schwartz says he always gets excited for snow this time of year. He drives to Bittersweet from northern Indiana two times a week.

“Honestly, the reason I come here a lot is because this is the best place around, as far as southwest Michigan,” he said.

He’s not alone. On Friday, there were plenty of skiers and snowboarders happy about West Michigan’s early winter.

“It’s pretty good,” said skier Tyler Dykstra. “They only have two runs open, so it’s alright.  But not bad.  I’m glad to just be out this early, honestly.”

Bittersweet General Manager Victor Gayheart says Thursday was the official season-opener. He hopes to stay open until at least mid-March.
