ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — In the gym at Forest Hills Central High School, 1,300 students gathered Friday for a history lesson a textbook simply couldn't do justice to.
With veterans serving as the guests of honor, the school marked Veterans Day and the 100th anniversary of the World War I Armistice with speeches, song and thanks.
Among the veterans in attendance was Tom Rismeirsma, a 1964 Forest Hills graduate and a veteran of the Vietnam War.
Reimersma was an aircraft mechanic. His job took him wherever aircraft needed repairs, including hot zones.
“I was a couple of times under fire,” he recounted.
Rismeirsma was fortunate. Many of his buddies were not.
