Standoff in GR over after suspect found dead inside

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A standoff in Grand Rapids has come to an end after officers found the suspect dead inside the home.

Police said they're not sure how the suspect died.

Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the home in the 1000 block of 3rd Street near Lane Avenue, north of I-196 on the report of a person with a gun who had pistol-whipped somebody at the home.

The victim and another person inside the house escaped. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries police say are not life-threatening.

It's unclear if the victim knew the suspect.

Police taped off the area and asked neighbors to stay inside their homes as the standoff continued. They also called in a special response team and crisis negotiators.

Police say 3rd Street NW between Lane and Garfield avenues was closed to traffic, but has since reopened. Several side streets leading into the area were also shut down.
