GRPD trying to gas out armed assault suspect

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police are asking neighbors of a home on 3rd Street NW to close their doors and windows as they use chemicals to try to force an armed assault suspect out of the attic.

Around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, police were called to the home in the 1000 block of 3rd Street near Lane Avenue, north of I-196 on the report of a person with a gun who had pistol-whipped somebody at the home.

The victim and another person inside the house escaped. The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries police say are not life-threatening.

It's unclear if the victim knew the suspect.

Police have taped off the area and asked neighbors to stay inside their homes as the standoff continues. They also called in a special response team and crisis negotiators.
