GRPD: False report from mom sparked Amber Alert

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Rapids police say a mother who reported her infant daughter missing, sparking an Amber Alert, made up the story.

Officers say the Kent County prosecutor will determine what, if any, charges 27-year-old Jennell Ross will face in connection to the Aug. 4 incident.

Grand Rapids police say Ross contacted them late Saturday evening, saying someone had stolen her vehicle with her 18-month-old daughter still inside. Officers located the vehicle a short time later, but the child was missing. That’s why Michigan State Police issued an Amber Alert around 3 a.m. Sunday.

Officers say at least a half-dozen agencies got involved in the case before a relative called to report she had the child, who was OK. The family member brought the infant to the Grand Rapids Police Department, which took custody of her.
