How music helps Mary Free Bed patients heal

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Mary Free Bed Rehabilitation Hospital in Grand Rapids is relying on a new tool to help patients recover from serious injury or illness.

"On a given day when I show up to work with a patient, it's my job to make them feel successful at taking part in music," Mary Free Bed music therapist Pete Muszkiewicz told 24 Hour News 8.

Mary Free Bed has only had someone in that position since September of last year.

"Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music intervention to help somebody achieve an individualized goal," Muszkiewicz explained.

Doug Simmons, 76, wants to be back to his old self, like he was before he had his most recent stroke.

"I think I'll make a complete recovery if I just keep working hard," he said.
