Lead-based paint removal free for some households

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — Some families in Grand Rapids can now get lead-based paint removed from their homes for free.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development has granted funding for a local program which safely removes lead-based paints. The Get the Lead Out! program offers free lead-based paint removal for qualifying renters, homeowners and landlords.

Grand Rapids zip code 49507 has the highest number of lead-poisoned children in the state, according to data from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.  This in part due to lead paint used in homes built before 1978.

Applicants must be Grand Rapids residents who live in a home built before 1978 with lead-based paint. Households with income below 80 percent of area median income qualify for the program.
