The Big Three 3-10-22

1 Michigan’s Republican-led Legislature has started voting to lift Michigan’s 27 cents-a-gallon gasoline and diesel taxes for 6 months to give drivers relief.

Democrat Gov. Gretchen Whitmer urged Congress to suspend the federal 18.4-cents-a-gallon gas tax and 24.4-cent diesel tax.

Her office has not embraced temporarily halting state fuel taxes, saying it would hamper road repairs.

Republicans say the state legislation would save drivers approximately $725 million.

The federal legislation would transfer general funds so transportation funding to states is not cut.

Both gas and diesel just topped a new national average all time high.

2 The House passed a massive spending bill to fund the federal government.

It includes $13.6 billion in aid to Ukraine. The tight time frame to reach an agreement on funding before Friday’s deadline.

The bill also includes $15.6 billion stand-alone coronavirus relief bill, but it is expected to face GOP opposition in the Senate and will have a difficult time getting the 60 votes needed in that chamber to overcome a filibuster.

3 The focus of a high-profile West Michigan trial has turned to the question of whether the FBI tricked four defendants into agreeing to a plot to kidnap the Governor.

In a recording, one of the defendants, Adam Fox, was heard saying he'd rather not resort to violence in response to oppressive government policies.

Fox's attorney told jurors that an FBI informant pressured him during visits to a Grand Rapids-area vacuum shop where Fox lived as a "misfit" in the basement to go through with the plan.
