Ottawa and Muskegon Transportation Staff take part in safety training

Over 200 transportation officials took part in safety training ahead of this school year.

On August 6, bus drivers and aides from Muskegon and Ottawa Area ISDs, attended a Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) training, with the goal being to prevent and de-escalate student behavior issues during transportation in preparation for the start of a new school year.

“This year's training provided staff with foundational tools for intentional self-awareness, self-regulation, self-care, relationship skills and attunement,” Becki Shackles, Muskegon/Ottawa Area Transportation Training Agency Coordinator for OAISD, said. “It also provided an opportunity to work on verbal and non-verbal communication and active listening skills to be used in stressful situations.”

Attendees stated the training was very useful and that they enjoyed learning new tools to have in their toolbox.
