Ottawa County Commission votes to get rid of "Where Freedom Rings" motto

OLIVE TOWNSHIP (WOOD-AM) - Ottawa County commissioners have voted 7-4 to get rid of the county's "Where Freedom Rings" motto.

It was adopted in 2023. At that time, a majority of commissioners were affiliated with Ottawa Impact.

"My vote today is not against personal liberties or freedom," Board Chair John Teeples said. "In short, this motto is divisive."

Not all commenters agreed with that sentiment.

"Freedom is not the problem," Harvey Nikkel of Jenison told the board. "Freedom is the standard."

Interim county administrator Gary Rosema said costs associated with the change will be negligible.
