Rockford Public Schools: Gun fell out of parent's vehicle during drop-off

Rockford Public Schools says a gun was quickly secured after it fell out of a parent's car on Tuesday morning.

Superintendent Steve Matthews says the incident happened in the parking lot near the community services/administration building.

Matthews said in a letter to parents that a parent saw the gun and locked it in their car while they called law enforcement.

Police arrived on the scene and took the gun into their possession.

Police determined who owns the gun and are investigating the incident.
