Muskegon Co. woman sentenced in horse neglect case

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — A former Cedar Creek Township supervisor will spend 45 days in jail for severe neglect of several horses in Muskegon County.

Krystal Smith was sentenced Thursday in Muskegon County District Court.        

On Dec. 5, she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of animal abuse. That plea came after authorities removed seven horses from her home on August. 19 after receiving a tip abouttheir malnourished condition.

In addition to 45 days in jail, Smith will also be required to perform 40 hours of community service.

Smithannounced her resignation as Cedar Creek Township supervisor in January. The resignation will take effect on March 31.
