Detectives seek suspect in cloned card scheme

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office is asking for help in identifying a man seen using counterfeit cards created from bank account information customers were fooled into giving over the phone.

The sheriff’s office says the suspects call from a number that appears to be from the victim's bank or credit union and claim to be from the financial institution’s fraud department. The suspects say they know the victim’s card number and expiration date, but they need their PIN and three-digit security code on the back of their card to address fraudulent charges.

The callers then use the numbers given by the victims to create clone cards, which they then use for numerous bogus transactions.

The sheriff’s office is reminding cardholders that banks and credit unions will never call you to ask for your PIN or the security code off the back of your card.

Anyone who recognizes the man captured on surveillance video using some of the cloned cards is encouraged to contact the Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office at 269.383.8748 or Silent Observer 269.343.2100.
