Water main break closes Lafayette Ave. for days

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — A section of Kalamazoo’s Lafayette Avenue will be closed for several days as city workers deal with yet another water main break.

City officials say Lafayette Avenue between Westbrook Street and Redwood Avenue will be closed until Feb. 8, as crews work to repair the water main and clean up the damage. Drivers should find an alternate route.

The extreme cold followed by a dramatic warmup will likely lead to more pipe problems throughout West Michigan, as the ground contracts and expands with temperature change.

Two weeks ago, Kalamazoo Public Services Director James Baker said there were six main breaks or water infrastructure-related issues over one weekend, all due to cold weather.

Monday, Ionia Public Schools canceled classes because a busted pipe flooded Ionia Middle School with 5 feet of water. The district is trying to determine what caused the break.
