GVSU president-elect to attend State of the Union address

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Grand Valley State University’s next president is heading to Washington, D.C. to experience President Donald Trump’s State of the Union Address in person.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Gary Peters of Michigan picked Dr. Philomena Mantella to join him for Tuesday’s address.

Mantella was unanimously elected last month to lead GVSU when President Thomas J. Haas retires on June 30. She'll be the university’s fifth president and the first woman to hold the post.

In a message announcing the event invitation, Peters commended GVSU for helping create a pipeline of trained workers to close Michigan's skills gap. Mantella said she looks “forward to partnering with him to promote even more pathways to prosperity.”

Trump’s State of the Union address is scheduled to start at 9 p.m. Tuesday and will air live on WOOD TV8. You can also livestream the event on woodtv.com .
