Ice jam closes Bridge Street bridge over Muskegon River

NEWAYGO, Mich. (WOOD) — As if icy roads weren't enough to worry about, some Newaygo residents now have to worry about an icy river.

The Muskegon River is up to 7 feet in some places, thanks to a 17-mile ice jam west of the Bridge Street bridge.

The ice jam keeps slamming big chunks of frozen river against the supports under bridge, causing concerns about structural integrity. As a result, the bridge was closed to traffic Thursday.
