GR-bound Amtrak train hits car in Indiana

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — An Amtrak train running from Chicago to Grand Rapids has been delayed after hitting a vehicle in Indiana.

Pere Marquette train 370 hit the vehicle on the tracks in the city of Chesterton, which is south of Michigan City.

Amtrak says no one was in the car at the time of the crash. None of the 163 passengers on the train were hurt, nor were any of the crew members.

A passenger on the train told 24 Hour News 8 via email she was told the car was stalled on the tracks. She said that the train would have to back up so the car could be moved and then inspectors would have to make sure the tracks were safe.

The train left Chicago around 6:30 p.m. and was supposed to arrive in Grand Rapids just after 11:30 p.m. It's not yet clear when it will actually pull into the Grand Rapids station.
