Man sentenced in deadly Kzoo liquor store shooting

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — The suspect in a deadly Kalamazoo liquor store shooting in September was sentenced to decades in prison.

On Dec. 7, Jerome Calvin Oday II of Kalamazoo pleaded guilty to one count of second-degree murder, one count of weapon felony firearm and fourth habitual offender. Three felony weapon charges were dropped in the plea agreement.

He was sentenced to 28 to 75 years in prison Monday.

Police say an argument led to the early Sept. 15 shooting of 23-year-old Tykarri Shaheed Lucas of Benton Harbor at J&B Discount Liquor. Oday fled the scene after the shooting and Lucas died at the scene.

The investigation led officers to the 2900 block of West Avenue, near 28th Street between Byron Center and Burlingame avenues in Wyoming. That’s where a SWAT team took the Oday into custody without incident.
