Teen charged for GRPD cruiser theft, 'joyride'

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A 17-year-old Grand Rapids girl who officers say stole a police cruiser for a “joyride” is now charged with two felonies.

Alyssa Martinez was arraigned Wednesday on felony charges of unlawful driving away of an automobile and malicious destruction of property, as well as a misdemeanor charge of resisting and obstructing police.

The incident all started around 4 a.m. on New Year's Day.

Police say they were responding to reports of a fight in the 1300 block of Leonard Street NW when they spotted a minivan leaving the scene. Once they stopped the vehicle, the driver, 19-year-old Gidalthi Reyes-Macias of Grand Rapids, ran. Two officers abandoned their police cruiser with the keys still inside to chase him.
