Suspicious backpack in Lansing leads to Senate evacuation

LANSING, Mich. (WOOD) — The Michigan Senate was evacuated Tuesday after Lansing police were alerted to a suspicious backpack left outside a nearby post office.

Lansing police said they took a call around 1:30 p.m. about the backpack, which was found next to a post office box outside the post office at 315 W. Allegan Street, across the street from the Capitol.

Lansing police tell NBC affiliate WILX a police K-9 "hit on it," so they called in Michigan State Police, who brought in a robot.

As a precaution, the nearby Michigan Senate was evacuated.

Michigan State Police taped off the area, but it appears officers are preparing to clear the scene.

It's unclear what the backpack contained.
