Suspects lead police on chase, give false names after arrest

FREMONT, Mich. (WOOD) — Police are trying to identify two break-in suspects that are in a Newaygo County jail.

The case started shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday when authorities were notified of a break in at the Dunham’s Sports store, located at 1413 W. Main Street in Fremont.

Fremont Police Chief Randall Wright said when officers arrived on scene, the suspects drove away. At one point, an officer was almost hit by the suspect vehicle.

After a half-hour police chase, the suspects took off on foot and broke into multiple private properties near Crystal Lake in Sherman Township, northeast of Fremont.

The suspects were arrested, but gave authorities fake names. Wright said investigators are using fingertips to figure out their true identities.

Investigators are also working to determine if the two are connected to any other crimes in and out of state because the suspects were driving a vehicle with a Kansas license plate.
