Icy roads cause multiple crashes on US-131 Tuesday

PLAINWELL, Mich. (WOOD) — There were reports of multiple crashes on US-131 due to icy road conditions, causing traffic backups Tuesday morning.

Several crashes were reported along both directions of US-131 between Martin and Plainwell in Allegan County.

In one crash, Allegan County dispatchers said around 3:30 a.m. Tuesday a semi-truck jackknifed on northbound US-131 near 142nd Avenue in Dorr Township, north of Wayland.

The Dorr Township Fire Department told 24 Hour News 8 that there were no reports of injuries and weather is believed to be a factor in the multi-vehicle crash.

All lanes of northbound US-131 after 142nd Avenue were closed for nearly an hour, then one lane was blocked for around two hours as crews worked to clear the scene.

The southbound lanes of US-131 at 116th Avenue near Martin were closed for around two hours, but are now open to traffic.

Northbound US-131 was also closed at Allegan Street, M-89, in Plainwell for nearly an hour due to a crash. The highway has since reopened.

In Kent County, the northbound and southbound lanes of US-131 before 100th Street in Byron Township were blocked throughout the morning due to multiple separate crashes.
