Frenzy preview: Regional finals feature O-K Green teams

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Area football conferences are probably green with envy.

The O-K Green has three teams still alive in the MHSAA state playoffs as conference champion Zeeland East, Holland Christian and Unity Christian compete for regional championships this weekend.

Zeeland East defeated Zeeland West last week to collect its first Division 3 district title since 2010 and will face Parma Western Friday at 7 p.m.

The Chix (10-1) only loss was to defending Division 4 state champion Catholic Central in Week 3.

Parma Western (10-1) has won nine games in a row since a loss to Jackson Lumen Christi and is making its first appearance in the regional finals in school history.

After five straight losing seasons, Holland Christian (8-3) has experienced unbridled success this season and won its first Division 4 district title since 2008 with a 22-19 win over South Christian.

On Saturday night, the Maroons will meet undefeated Edwardsburg (11-0), which has been dominant on both sides of the ball. The Eddies have scored 575 points while allowing a mere 66 points and posting five shutouts.

Unity Christian won a district crown in thrilling fashion. The Crusaders overcame a 27-point halftime deficit against Muskegon Oakridge and pulled out a 40-37 win.

Unity (9-2) will have another challenge in Saturday’s Division 5 regional final as it takes on unbeaten Kalamazoo United (11-0) and senior quarterback Eric Wenzel.
