Parents of newlyweds killed in crash find strength together

HEATH TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Every week since an Allegan County crash took the lives of their children, the parents of a pair of newlyweds meet to grieve and share memories.

Hannah and Logan Allbaugh died together on July 17 when a 21-year-old Wayland man ran a stop sign and crashed into their vehicle in Heath Township.

The crash happened less than three miles away from where the childhood friends got married 25 days earlier.

Sara Kwekel recounted the life-changing moment when police knocked on her door.

“For a split second, I thought Aaron died on his bike,” she told the Holland Sentinel. “It was the only time in my life I wanted to say ‘no’ when I was asked if I was Hannah’s mom. It’s on a loop in my head.”

When Kewkel asked if her daughter was alone when she died, the officer only said “no.” She said she knew that meant she had lost her new son, too.
