ArtPrize finalists: Critics not funny, not fair

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — ArtPrize 10 finalists on Tuesday were still digesting the controversial feedback critics shared in "Why These Finalists?" the night before.

The show on WOOD TV8 focused on the two-dimensional and installation entries up for juried and public vote prizes in the world's largest art competition, and the critics had harsh words for a few of them.

One of those was Abiding In the Shadow, an installation in the lobby of the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel. The trio of panelists said they didn't think it fit in the well-known venue.

“I really didn't like this one. I tried really hard,” critic Charlie Tatum said. “It felt like Christmas decorations or something. It didn't feel really exciting."

Artist Jeff Best told 24 Hour News 8 that he didn't watch the show. He was also a finalist in ArtPrize Nine and said he didn't want to again witness critics' brutal honesty. A family member still filled him in on what he missed.

“They're trying to be funny. They weren't really funny as far as I’m concerned, but that's fine,” Best said.
