Legislature OKs minimum wage, sick time initiatives

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Two initiative petitions that were scheduled to be on the ballot in November have been adopted by the state Legislature, meaning you will not cast a vote on them.

On Wednesday, the Republican-controlled state Senate and House of Representatives passed measures to gradually raise the minimum wage to $12 per hour and require employers to provide paid sick time.

The Legislature always has the option to take action on items that have been started with petitions. But Democrats are concerned that since the initiatives were passed by the Legislature, it will be too easy to change them later.
