Autopsy: Couple found dead in home were beaten

BOWNE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — Authorities have determined a married couple found dead in their Kent County home were the victims of a homicide.

On Tuesday, 62-year-old Patty Syrek and 66-year-old Theodore Syrek were found dead at their home in the 9000 block of Jordan River Drive SE in Bowne Township, east of Caledonia. Authorities went to the residence after a family member asked if deputies could check on the couple’s well-being.

An autopsy determined both of the Syreks died from “blunt cranial cerebral trauma,” meaning they were hit in the head. The medical examiner determined the couple was assaulted by another individual. It's unclear what was used to beat them.

Undersheriff Michelle LaJoye-Young said investigators found the Syreks dead in their bedroom. The investigation has yet to determine if the attack was perpetrated by a stranger or someone they knew. It's also unclear how long they've been dead.
