Trader Joe's Worker Helped Colleagues Escape Hostage Situation

A Trader Joe's employee jumped into action and helped save some of his fellow co-workers after a gunman took hostages inside of the Los Angeles grocery store. When shots rang out Sean Gerace grabbed his colleagues and ran to a storage room upstairs.

"I grabbed an emergency ladder, barricaded the hallway, grabbed a weapon, put the ladder out the window, and just tried to get the attention of a SWAT officer," he told NBC Los Angeles.

Once he had the attention of the officer, he helped everybody down the ladder before running for safety himself.

The terrifying ordeal started when a man crashed his car into a utility pole following a high-speed chase with police. After exchanging gunfire with the officers he ran inside of the Trader Joe's and took dozens of people hostage.

Following a tense, hours-long standoff in which one woman was killed, the suspect agreed to release the hostages and surrendered to police.
