Gran Fondo draws over 1,600 cyclists to downtown Grand Rapids

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — More than 1,600 cyclists filled the streets of downtown Grand Rapids Saturday morning to fight skin cancer.

Michigan State University's nationally-ranked cycling event, Gran Fondo, took off from downtown.

The "big ride" offers four route options for cyclists of any skill level.

Cyclists ride 12, 25, 40 or 80 miles in a timed, non-competitive event that takes them along scenic routes -- the longest of which goes all the way to Lake Michigan and back.

Participants from 20 states outside of Michigan, including one of world's most well-known cyclists, George Hincapie, will also ride.

Riders are encouraged to stop and enjoy gourmet food stops along the way.

The finish line will be lined with music, craft brews and a grand feast.
