Athlete dies during Grand Rapids Triathlon

ADA TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WOOD) — An athlete died while running a triathlon in Ada Township, organizers have confirmed.

Gary  Grunwald was in the midst of running in the USAT Clydesdale &  Athena National Championship hosted by the Grand Rapids Triathlon when  he died. The 61-year-old man was from Elk Grove, California, according  to event officials. 

A spokesperson for USA Triathlon and the  Tris4Health Race Management Company said they were “deeply saddened” by  his death on Sunday.

“The  sport lost a member of its beloved community, and we extend our  heartfelt condolences to Gary's family and friends,” the groups said in a  statement on Monday.

Event officials said they are working to gather more information regarding the incident.
