WALKER, Mich. (WOOD) — The eastbound lanes of I-96 at Alpine Avenue in Walker will close next week. The closure will start on Wednesday, April 18.
It’s part of a large-scale Michigan Department of Transportation project which will have several different closure configurations between Alpine and Plainfield avenues throughout the summer.
Traffic can exit at Alpine Avenue or follow the posted MDOT detour, which will direct drivers to take southbound US-131 to eastbound I-196 to reconnect with eastbound I-96.

The posted detour is likely to add to delays along southbound US-131 between I-96 and I-196 — which is the busiest stretch of US-131 in the state.
Nearly 50,000 vehicles travel on I-96 between Alpine Avenue and US-131 every day. More than 55,000 drivers travel the stretch between US-131 and Plainfield Avenue.
