Hastings student facing charges for bomb threat

HASTINGS, Mich. (WOOD) — A Hastings High School student is facing three felony charges for making a false bomb threat that forced the district to cancel classes earlier this month.

A 17-year-old student, whose name is being withheld pending arraignment, is charged with making a false threat of terrorism and two counts of making a false report of a bomb or harmful device.

The false threat of terrorism charge carries a 20-year maximum penalty and the other charges each carry a maximum penalty of four years in prison.

The charges stem from a Feb. 28 incident where the student allegedly wrote a threat on the bathroom wall at Hastings High School, which gave a specific date and led to the decision to close the Hastings Area Schools on March 5.
