Senate Shuts Down Abortion Bill

The Senate is shutting down an effort to ban abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy.  The bill was backed by President Donald Trump and seen as a vote to call out red state Democrats up for re-election in the fall.  Trump said he was disappointed the Senate didn't have enough votes to overcome a filibuster.  Monday's vote against advancing the measure was 51-46.

The Supreme Court has ruled that states can't restrict abortion until a fetus is viable outside the womb, usually around 23 or 24 weeks.
