Construction, utility work causing traffic delays at times in G.R.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- Some construction and utility work in downtown Grand Rapids has been causing traffic backups at times along Wealthy Street near Jefferson and Lafayette avenues.

The city told WOOD Radio News the delays on Wealthy stem from several overlapping utility and paving projects. DTE Energy completed work on a new gas main, and that was followed by meter work and system abandonments that will be taking place over the next two weeks. That involves disconnecting old pipes.

Westbound Wealthy Street remains closed at Jefferson Avenue as part of that ongoing work.

On Tuesday, a contractor completed pavement work on Cherry Street between Lafayette and Prospect avenues. That may have contributed to backups during the morning commute.

The city said in a news release it understands there have been significant delays at times, including challenges for buses.

"We appreciate the public’s patience. Based on the current schedule and weather conditions, the most disruptive portions of this work are expected to wrap up within the next two weeks."
