Woman dies in Mecosta County house fire

AETNA TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office says a fatal house fire in Aetna Township late last night is not considered suspicious in origin.

It broke out around 11 o'clock on 220th Avenue at One Mile Road in Morley.

A sheriff's deputy arrived to find the house engulfed in flames. Firefighters later found an elderly woman dead inside. They say she was not able to escape because of mobility issue. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

Here are some additional details provided by the MCSO:

On Monday, December 22, 2025, at approximately 2306 hrs. Meceola Central Dispatch received a call reporting a structure fire at 754 220th Ave Morley, MI Aetna Township.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the Mecosta County Sheriff's Office Fire Investigation Team. The fire is not considered suspicious at this time. The Mecosta County Sheriff's Office was assisted in this complaint by the Mecosta Township Fire /Rescue, Big Rapids Department of Public Safety – Fire Division, Big Rapids Township Fire, Morley Area Fire Department, Mecosta County EMS, Meceola Central Dispatch, Mecosta County Sheriff's Office Fire
