CEDAR RAPIDS, IA. -- The West Michigan Whitecaps cruised to a Midwest League championship Tuesday night the way they rolled through the entire 2025 season, with a 3-1 win against the Kernels in Cedar Rapids.
The high-A minor league affiliate of the Detroit Tigers won the first- and second-half division titles and made it look incredibly easy, posting the best minor league baseball record in nearly three decades.
After the game, Whitecaps manager Tony Cappuccilli told his team it was, "One of the best teams ever!"
Whitecaps winning pitcher Joe Miller spoke to WOOD-TV on the field after the game.
"It feels good. I think for a lot of us, it's our first time winning a championship in professional baseball. Came kind of close before, so really wanted to finally get there. And it's good that we finally got there. And I'm happy for it," Miller said.
Whitecaps outfielder Austin Murr said he was grateful the Whitecaps closed all the best-of-three championship series with two straight wins rather than having it come down to a deciding Game 3.
"I mean, it's what we wanted," he told WOOD-TV. For this to be our last game of the year. And the fact we were able to do it and leave no doubt that we're probably the best minor league team in a long, long time. So, to have that all said and done with is a pretty great feeling."
