GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -- A tribute to the Greatest Generation is taking place this week in downtown Grand Rapids to mark 80 years since the Second World War ended.
Several events were held on Labor Day, Sept. 1. Photographer Steve Katerberg captured some of the highlights from Monday's 1945-era Honor Parade with a series of pictures. We have included just a handful from that collection in the attachments.
The Labor Day event commemorated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two. It included a "Wings of Honor" flyover, featuring vintage World War Two aircraft, including some that were built at Willow Run.
Another event was scheduled for Tuesday at noon at the J.W. Marriott in downtown G.R. It was free for the public to attend.
The guest list included Pulitzer Prize-winning World War II historian and journalist Rick Atkinson.
But that wasn't all. Last week on West Michigan's Morning News, Joel Westphal told WOOD Radio who else was on the docket.
"We've got Susan Eisenhower; granddaughter of the President of the United States (Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1953-1961) on September 4th at 6 o'clock. We've got the World War Two film festival going on (September) 5th through the 7th; that's all free," Westphall said.
