Man who allegedly shot his girlfriend in Robinson Township arraigned

ROBINSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- A district court judge in Ottawa County has arraigned a 35-year-old man who allegedly shot his girlfriend on May 23rd in Robinson Township.

Sheriff's deputies say Vaughn Lowe Smith was video-arraigned Wednesday on two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder, three counts of Felony Firearms and one count of Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person.

He allegedly shot the 34-year-old woman in the leg and head at a home on 96th Avenue near Winans Street. She is recovering. A 16-year-old male stopped the attack by stabbing Smith in the neck with a knife. The teenager was shot at but was not hit by any bullets.

Per a Sheriff's Office news release: "Investigation showed that a 35 year old male shot his girlfriend while the couple's five children were at the residence. One of the children, a 16 year old male, intervened with a knife to protect the mother."

Police say Smith is in the Ottawa County Jail after being released from a hospital. Bond was set at $5,000 cash/surety.
